The Role of Fasting
Prayer is a well-acknowledged discipline among Christians, integral to Jesus' life and ministry, as He proclaimed, "My house shall be called a house of prayer" (Matthew 21:13, KJV). At its core, prayer serves as the primary means of communication and communion with our heavenly Father. It allows us to seek and understand the Father's will on various matters. Notably, in the model prayer taught by Jesus in Luke 11, the emphasis is on directing all prayers toward God the Father and praying in Jesus' name (John 16:24, KJV).
However, often missing from many teachings is the spiritual dimension of fasting. In Matthew 17:14-21, Jesus instructs His disciples to incorporate fasting into their prayer life. The disciples had unsuccessfully attempted to cast out an evil spirit from a child. Jesus responded by linking the necessity of fasting with prayer to confront certain spiritual challenges.
In the account, the disciples, relying on their observations of Jesus, assumed they could cast out the demon. Yet, the situation proved more challenging than expected, leading to the distressed father's testimony. Jesus intervened, casting out the evil spirit and healing the child. Later, when the disciples asked why they had failed, Jesus attributed it to unbelief and introduced the need for prayer coupled with fasting, stating, "This kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting" (Matthew 17:21, KJV).
What lessons can we glean from this?
Power in Prayer: Adding fasting to prayer provides increased spiritual power to overcome the challenges presented by Satan's tactics in spiritual warfare.
Principles for Practice: Jesus's mention of "this kind" suggests that the principle of adding fasting to prayer applies not only to specific instances like demon possession but also to any persistent and challenging problems for which we seek solutions.
As we reflect on Jesus' words, it becomes evident that fasting enhances the effectiveness of our prayers, especially when confronted with formidable spiritual obstacles. The disciples, having observed and learned to pray from Jesus, were now called to embrace the practice of fasting to deepen their spiritual authority.
May you experience increased power in your prayers as you integrate fasting into your spiritual journey.
